First Impressions
There's something special about the Gold Label 817e that grabbed me the moment I picked it up. It feels like Taylor intentionally blended the warmth and character of a 1930s–40s flat-top with the precision and playability they're known for today. The torrefied Sitka spruce top and Honduran rosewood back and sides give it a deep, resonant low end and a smooth, aged-in response that feels alive under your hands. Even before plugging in, the guitar has a broken-in voice — full, warm, and balanced — thanks to the Grand Pacific body and V-Class bracing that lets notes bloom and sustain in a really musical way.
What surprised me most is how effortless it is to play. The Standard Carve mahogany neck feels instantly familiar, and the ebony fingerboard has that perfect mix of smoothness and grip. Plugged in, the LR Baggs Element VTC captures the guitar's natural tone without coloring it — just a clean, honest translation of what the wood is already doing. The vintage-inspired touches — the revamped headstock, script logo, and Continental inlays — make it feel like a modern instrument with an old soul.
