Yellowstone Fall 2026

October 2

Home to Gardiner, MT (via West Yellowstone, Madison, Firehole, Mammoth) Photo: firehole-falls-day1.jpg (Firehole Falls, iPhone)

Travel day. Up early, packed the car, and pointed it north. Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Ashton, Island Park, West Yellowstone. Most of the morning was just road.

We stopped at the Walmart in Idaho Falls for supplies, then again in West Yellowstone to fill up before heading into the park.

Along the Madison there was a small crowd pulled off the road, all looking at the same spot. We couldn't see anything. Staci asked a woman standing there what they were looking at, and in the strongest southern accent she said, "A white goat." I don't know why that was so funny. It just was. We were copying her the rest of the way through the park. What you seeing? A white goat.

We drove the Firehole Canyon loop. The falls were running hard, and that ended up being the only photo of the day. Not much in the way of animals.

Between Mammoth and Gardiner we pulled into the Slide Lake overlook to see what was around. While I was standing there I heard an elk bugle. Never did find him.

Checked into the Antler Inn in Gardiner and called it a night.
