The Next Day Extra EP

The Next Day showed up in 2013 without warning, Bowie’s first record in ten years, dropped on his birthday. This EP is the overspill from those sessions, outtakes and remixes pressed to vinyl for Record Store Day Black Friday 2022.

The one everybody comes for is the James Murphy remix of “Love Is Lost.” Ten minutes, Steve Reich rhythms running underneath, LCD Soundsystem all over the production. You put it on and realize you’ve heard it three times without deciding to. The Venetian Mix of “I’d Rather Be High” is the other keeper, slower and more dissolved than the album cut.

The rest is what a leftovers disc usually is. “Born in a UFO” sounds exactly like the title. “God Bless the Girl” closes it quiet, easy to skip the first time and harder to skip after that.
