The Next Day EP

The Next Day arrived in 2013 without warning. Bowie’s first record in ten years, dropped on his birthday. The Extra EP is the overspill: outtakes and remixes from those same sessions, pressed to vinyl for Record Store Day Black Friday 2022.

Side A leads with the James Murphy remix of “Love Is Lost.” Ten minutes, Steve Reich rhythms underneath, LCD Soundsystem fingerprints on the production. The kind of track you put on and realize you’ve listened to three times without deciding to.

Side B has the Venetian Mix of “I’d Rather Be High” — slower, more dissolved than the album version. Both reward patience in a way the main record sometimes doesn’t.     

The outtakes are fine. “Born in a UFO” sounds exactly like what it is. “God Bless the Girl” is the quiet one at the end of Side B that you might skip the first time.

Then not skip again.
