By 1978 Genesis was down to three. Gabriel had been gone since 1975, and now Hackett had walked too, so this is Collins, Banks and Rutherford working out what the band is without him.

“Follow You Follow Me” is the one everybody knows. First real pop hit they had, Collins out front, and you can hear the whole next decade of Genesis starting right there. If you came for Foxtrot, it reads more like a warning than a single.

The rest still carries some of the old weight. “Burning Rope” and “Deep in the Motherlode” stretch out, and “Undertow” holds up. But a lot of it sounds thin, songs that went to tape a pass early, and you keep hearing the gap where Hackett’s guitar used to fill things in.
